The Regional Chemistry Olympiad Draws Students and Teachers in an Engaging Competition and Immersive Learning Experience
LEGAZPI CITY, Bicol Region – The Regional Chemistry Olympiad – Region V Selection, an annual event hosted by BU-RCSMED and the BUCS Chemistry Department, was held on March 8, 2025, at the Bicol University College of Science, Main Campus. The event drew 93 student contestants and 65 teacher coaches representing 32 schools across the Bicol Region.
The competition commenced with an elimination round featuring a written examination for participating students. Following the examination, 17 student-contestants achieved scores within the top 10 scores, leading to their advancement. In the final round, these students completed a written free-response questionnaire to determine the top 5 individuals who will represent the Bicol Region at the Philippine National Chemistry Olympiad scheduled for March 22, 2025, at UP-Manila. The Philippine Federation of Chemical Societies (PFCS) hosts the national selection.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing the top student contestants. The competition culminated in announcing the Champion, 1st Runner-Up, and a triple tie for 2nd Runner-Up.
In addition to the competition, the event featured a ‘Chem Spectacle: Lab in Action’ session for students, facilitated by officers and members of the Bicol University Chemical Science Society (BU-CheSS). Parallel laboratory and lecture sessions were also conducted for teachers, led by Professors Ma. Corazon B. Barrameda, Kimbhierly M. Ludovice, and Syndel O. Lugena from the Bicol University College of Science (BUCS) Chemistry Department. The topics included Redox Reactions, Separation Techniques, and Titration.
Beyond identifying top student talent, this event served as a catalyst for the advancement of chemistry education in the region, aiming to inspire students to take STEM careers and capacitate teachers. The Olympi ad underscores Bicol University’s commitment to promoting science and mathematics education in schools.
The success of the Olympiad was the result of a collaborative effort of BU-RCSMED, BUCS Chemistry Department, BU Chemical Science Society (CheSS), and the Philippine Association of Chemistry Teachers – Region V Chapter (PACT Bicol) with support from the Department of Education Regional Office V (DepEd V) through an advisory.
