From Theory to Practice: Pre-Service Teachers Explore GCED Pedagogies

Daraga, Albay — February 5, 2025 — Aspiring educators participating in the Mentoring Program on Global Citizenship Education (GCED) took another significant step forward with the successful conduct of Workshop Day 2: Pedagogical Strategies for GCED Integration, held at the Bicol University College of Education (BUCE) Demonstration Hall.

Now on its second week, the ongoing mentoring program—launched last January 22—aims to prepare pre-service teachers to integrate GCED themes into their future classrooms. The February 5 session focused on exploring practical and participatory teaching methods that foster global awareness, critical thinking, peace, and inclusion among learners.

The workshop opened with a recap of the first session, followed by two core topics:

  • “GCED Pedagogies” delivered by Dr. Rebecca Rosario O. Bercasio, Director of the BU Center for Teaching Excellence, highlighted participatory and learner-centered approaches that align with the transformative goals of GCED.
  • “Teaching Peace and Diversity through Literature”, presented by Ms. Cindy Grace Villanueva, introduced the use of PEACE Pedagogy, showcasing how stories and literary texts can be powerful tools in promoting empathy, mutual respect, and cultural understanding in the classroom.

Participants then engaged in collaborative lesson planning, where they worked in groups to develop lesson plans that meaningfully incorporate GCED principles into core subject areas. These lesson drafts were presented in a peer-sharing session and received constructive feedback from mentors to refine and strengthen instructional design.

Each activity was designed to equip participants with not only theoretical insights but also hands-on strategies to promote global citizenship, social responsibility, and inclusive education.

With strong engagement and commitment from the participants, the mentoring program continues to provide a vital platform for future educators to internalize and practice GCED principles, ensuring they are well-prepared to nurture globally competent learners.

The GCED Mentoring Program continues weekly and reflects Bicol University’s broader mission to advance transformative education aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.
