The BU ACUC shall evaluate and approve all protocols of proposed scientific procedures involving the use and manipulation of laboratory animals. These refers to any live vertebrate animal, whether in a domestic or wild state. This may also include activities that entails manipulations of animals such as researches, experiments, studies or investigations, teaching and instructions and product testing (food, drugs, agrochemicals and cosmetic testing). The review is specifically on animal care and use, not a review or evaluation of the entire merit of the study. The BU ACUC shall monitor and review the implementation of the approved scientific procedures through the conduct of facility inspections. Also, institutions shall periodically review written procedures to ensure consistent application of standard principles pertaining to the humane care and use of laboratory animals.

Training and Education

            Ensuring efficient and high-quality science and animal well-being must be properly implemented by assuring that all personnel involved with the care and use of animals experienced adequate trainings and/or qualified in basic principles of laboratory animal science. The Institution are responsible for providing appropriate resources to support personnel training and the BU ACUC is responsible for providing oversight and for evaluating the effectiveness of the training program.

            In addition, all students and faculty members who will carry out researches that will utilize laboratory animals shall be required to attend Workshop on Proper Handling of Laboratory Animals. This workshop shall be conducted regularly by the Committee in cooperation with the respective units/colleges of the University.
