In many parts of Asia, including the Philippines, elementary generalist teachers have faced unique challenges. They were expected to teach a wide range of subjects—often without specialized training in each. This made teaching complex topics like science and mathematics especially daunting, sometimes leading to gaps in confidence and subject mastery (Nioda et al., 2024).
Recognizing these challenges, Bicol University-RCSMED took action! In partnership with the BU College of Science, BU College of Education, BU Tabaco, and the San Jose Community College Education Department, we recently launched the “Content Enhancement in Science and Mathematics for Elementary Pre-Service Teachers” program last March 11, 18, 25, April 8, and April 29, 2025, at San Jose Community College, Malilipot, Albay.
Why did this matter? This initiative directly supported Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, which calls for inclusive, equitable, and high-quality learning opportunities for all. Education is not just a right—it is the foundation for social and economic progress! The said activity aims to (1) Equip pre-service teachers with a stronger grasp of science and math concepts, especially for intermediate grades; and (2) Enhance Pedagogy: Share practical teaching strategies to make lessons engaging and effective for young learners.
